NFL May Fine Favre for Illegal Block

Oh, how quickly some saints can become sinners…in Vi-queen gear.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre potentially could face a fine by the league for an illegal block during a preseason game Monday night. The play is under review by the league, an NFL official said Tuesday.

Favre was penalized for an illegal crack-back block on the Houston Texans’ Eugene Wilson. Favre lined up at wide receiver on the play in a “Wildcat” formation.

“What was up with that?” Wilson said after the game of Favre’s illegal block, according to the Associated Press. “Seriously, what was up with that?”

Favre said during his postgame news conference that he hadn’t been trying to hurt Wilson.

Even so, the league office handed out numerous fines last season for illegal hits during games, to the point that players and union officials were critical of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s approach. The fines were imposed in many instances to protect quarterbacks. In this case, it’s a quarterback that potentially could be fined.

USAToday has a long blog post (H/T Sean Hackbarth) on how the usually Favre-loving, heavy-breathing, slurpers in Monday Night Football booth turned on him on a dime upon seeing the replay.  My favorite was play-by-play man Mike Tirico.

Tirico, the play-by-play announcer, added to the criticism.

“I don’t care, Brett Favre or not, that’s not cool,” said Tirico, as Jaworski seconded his notion.

“You’re messing with a guy’s career when you do that. That’s not right.”

Here’s Favre’s “Ah shucks” explanation after the game to the Minneapolis press.

“Percy was running my way Believe me, I hope he’s OK. I hope it didn’t look as bad on film as it may have seemed but my intentions, believe me, were not to hurt anyone, including myself. Percy was running my way, I was out there, there’s going to be those people who say you should have done nothing. Get out of the way. But I think had I not blocked anyone and just got out of the way and Percy gets hit and gets hurt, I think that looks worse.”

There’s nothing against Favre throwing a block, just not as illegal a block as he threw.

Favre: “I May Have Cracked Rib”

How and when did this happen exactly?

Did he fall out of bed wrong?  Was he not wearing the special QB Red Jersey, or did he fall off the tractor?

Brett Favre told ESPN before the Minnesota Vikings‘ game on Monday that he suspects he may have a cracked rib.

Favre hasn’t had an official diagnosis, but he says taking a deep breath causes discomfort. The 39-year-old quarterback isn’t listed on the injury report and no other other Vikings official mentioned the injury pregame.

The three-time MVP says he has no plans to wear any kinds of special padding, saying “the damage is done.” Favre is expected to play the entire first half against the Houston Texans.

Favre, who signed a $25 million deal with the Vikings on Aug. 18, completed just one pass for four yards over two series in his Minnesota debut just days later.

Me?  I’ll believe it when I see it.  Favre may indeed be injured, but it could also be all a stunt to either get more rest as he continues to work the rust of not being at training camp off or wants the Texans to lay up on him.

That, or he’s not injured, fakes it, and then has a great game to grow the legend.

Sorry if that sounds overly cynical, but I’m taking this season with Brett Favre in Vi-queens purple as he is not the down home country boy who plays for the love of the game, but is a master manipulator who will do and say anything to get his way.

Also, when did he get a medical degree?  I doubt he’s qualified to self-diagnose.
