Now This is a Gaffe

Has Hawaii had “major earthquake” in the past 7 years?  Because, this exchange from the President in this interview highlights a few things.

Here are those things:

1) He clearly has forgotten when the last “major earthquake” in Hawaii was.  According to those who’ve looked it up, it’s apparently, like 1975 or something.  I believe Obama may have been in high school for it.  It killed two people.  (Tragic, but not big, even for 1975 standards.)

Frankly, I think you have more chance of being killed by falling in a volcano in Hawaii than an earthquake.

2) He’s clearly not read the Senate Bill.  The actual “Louisiana Purchase” text calls for only those states which have been declared “major disaster areas for the past seven years,” a time frame which coincides with Hurricane Katrina.  To make it clearly, I’ve been told by a friend in McConnell’s Communications office that there’s more finite language which makes it more than clear only Louisiana was meant.

No other state will benefit from the “Louisiana Purchase.”  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) made sure of that.

3) Obama’s obsession of getting some form of “health care reform,” whether actually good, fiscally-sound, or otherwise has seriously damaged the guy’s logic circuits on this area of public policy.

Obama to Announce Two New Nuclear Power Plants

One theory I keep having is that eventually, there will be an economic war on the American Political Left.  It will be “The Green” versus “The Blue.”  The environmental movement versus traditional manufacturing labor unions.

It’s not to say the Left itself doesn’t see this coming itself.  The entire concept of “Green Jobs” is nothing more than a smokescreen by the environmental movement to get unions on board.  They say, “No, we aren’t trying to kill your jobs, we’re replacing them with ones that won’t kill the environment.”

Of course, as Spain has shown us, there are no such thing as “Green Jobs,” just “Jobs Environmentalists like funded through tax breaks.” (This sounds so familiar, not sure why…)

So, in what appears to be another part of the “Green Jobs” plan — or how it will be sold today — Obama today in Maryland plans to announce the start of two new nuclear power plants.  So, what will the “No Nukes” crowd say about this?  We’re about to find out.

On Tuesday, President Obama will announce plans to break ground on two new nuclear reactors at a Southern Company plant in Burke, Georgia — the  first new U.S. nuclear reactors since the incident at Three Mile Island in 1979.

The president will make the announcement at the IBEW Local Headquarters in Lanham, Md., where union members can learn applications that can be used in the construction of nuclear power plants.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 authorized the Department of Enegery to issue loan guarantees “for projects that avoid, reduce, or sequester air pollutants or greenhouse gas emissions and employ new or significantly-improved technologies,” the White House official said, adding that it has been one of Energy Secretary Stephen Chu’s top priorities to allocate $18.5 billion under that authority.

The President has proposed tripling loan guarantees for nuclear-power plant construction to more than $54 billion in his FY2011 budget.

Nuclear energy meets approximately 20 percent of the United States’ energy needs. According to Southern Company, the new project will create approximately 3,000 onsite construction jobs in the short term and approximately 850 permanent operations jobs.

During his presidential campaign, then-Sen. Obama was a qualified supporter of new nukes.

“I think that nuclear power should be in the mix when it comes to energy,” he said as a candidate, adding “I don’t think it’s our optimal energy source because we haven’t figured out how to store the waste safely or recycle the waste.”

I for one applaud the President for going down this path, just as he promised he would.  Now, could we in Wisconsin end our own ban on new nuclear power plant construction in the state?

It’s long past due, and “The China Syndrome” was just a movie…a very factually-incorrect movie.

WH Taking Mass. Senate Temperature for Visit

If I was a high-ranking official, giving everything that could be related to it (I’ll venture into those later), why would you send the POTUS into Boston for a campaign stop?

The White House has shown increasing alarm about the race, with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel placing calls to top Massachusetts Democrats to assess Coakley’s chances and weigh the costs and benefits of a potential Obama visit.

A top national liberal blog, AmericaBlog, writes the following about a Massachusetts visit:

Now, I’m sure some in the White House won’t want to touch this race. After all, they’ll argue, what if Obama helps Coakley and she loses? Then the media will say that Obama himself lost. News flash: If we lose Ted Kennedy’s seat in liberal Massachusetts to a conservative Republican, and thus lose our quasi- 60 vote majority in the Senate, and thus endanger health care reform and the entire Democratic agenda, then you can bet the media, and the public, is going to take this as a sign that Obama lost, regardless of whether he helps or not.

All this hand-wringing is now moot, since Politico is now reporting Obama will be campaigning with Coakley on Sunday.

The only reason the White House is going into the Bay State is that internal DNC/DSCC/Coakley campaign numbers must indeed be showing that Coakley is bleeding and will lose without as much help as possible.  There is little to no pluses for the White House to gain by going there, and the reasons are many.

  • It adds to the narrative that things are beginning to fall apart for the Democrats, nationally.
  • Haiti – This makes “Guess we know what the White House views as the ‘true natural disaster'” jokes to almost write themselves.
  • For a White House that is still saying that sending POTUS to Boston won’t make the race “About Them,” it naturally does and will.
  • Obvious comparisons to unsuccessful attempts to “Seal the Deal” in New Jersey and Virginia will be made.
  • A Coakley lose — though attempts will be made — can no longer be blamed completely on her.

Obama Not Waiting for Congress on Cap and Trade

Good to know we have a White House which not only listens to the American people, but has the patience to wait for Congress to debate the measures put before it.  It’d be a real shame if the President campaigned as one sort of man, and then completely reversed his actions once in power when it came to executive power, legislative action, and the bureaucracy.

Oh, wait…

The Environmental Protection Agency has concluded greenhouse gases are endangering people’s health and must be regulated, signaling that the Obama administration is prepared to contain global warming without congressional action if necessary.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson scheduled a news conference for later Monday to announce the so-called endangerment finding, officials told The Associated Press, speaking privately because the announcement had not been made.

The finding is timed to boost the administration’s arguments at an international climate conference — beginning this week — that the United States is aggressively taking actions to combat global warming, even though Congress has yet to act on climate legislation.

Can’t wait to see the Senate’s reaction to this unilateral action by the President.

That’s nothing, you should hear what some of the military rank and file think of this strategy…

That Ladies and Gentlemen, is how close “the Party Crashers” got to the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of India (left of Obama), in what looks like the Blue Room.  One is grateful they’re just publicity hounds and not assassins.

ABC’s Jake Tapper has the story from the White House, which is not commenting on the breakdown in security in what is supposed to be one of the world’s most secure parimeters.

The White House would not comment on the meeting between the reality-tv seeking couple and the leader of the free world.  White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said the Secret Service has the confidence of the President.

“The United States Secret Service said they made a mistake and they are taking action to identify exactly what happened and they will take the appropriate measures pending the results of their investigation,” Shapiro said.

Indeed, tonight in a written statement Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan said his agency is “concerned and embarrassed” for allowing the Virginia couple to slip through their security.

“The preliminary findings of our internal investigation have determined established protocols were not followed at an initial checkpoint, verifying that two individuals were on the guest list,” Sullivan said, “Although these individuals went through magnetometers and other levels of screening, they should have been prohibited from entering the event entirely. That failing is ours.”

Yeah someone is going to be leaving the POTUS detail in the Secret Service and will be protecting ‘a high-value asset’ at a base in South Dakota or Alaska soon.
