Charlie Cook: “Health Care is Obama’s Iraq”

Fascinating take from this short excerpt by the Hotline's Charlie Cook (also of Cook Political Report) on the 2010 elections.

Terrible comparison. Obama wants to improve healthcare in this country and is being villified for it. Bush lead us into an unprovoked and unjust war in Iraq where thousands of Americans made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and was, rightfully so, villified for it. So not even close.

As a healthcare provider do I think that there need to be changes in the system? Yes. Do I agree with everything in the Healthcare bill? Short answer is no.

One thing that I don't hear anywhere is that healthcare reform may actually help improve unemployment and has the potential to stimulate the economy. If there were a more affordable healthcare option available, people that were ready to retire but couldn't because they need their job for health insurance reasons may finally bite the bullet and retire. That could potentially free up many jobs and decrease health care costs for employers because their workforces would get younger and healthier.

It is absurd to me that this country is willing to spend money to improve other nations but balk at improving our own.

Cook's point is that it's a policy decision the bulk of Americans disagree with and the continued pursuit of it that has bogged down Obama and placed an anchor on his fellow Democrats in an electoral fashion. If looked through that prism; which is Cook's area of expertise, the comparison more than fits.
