Doyle Appoints Sherman Judge

This is an interesting choice.

Gov. Jim Doyle has appointed fellow Democratic state Rep. Gary Sherman of Port Wing to be a judge on the state Court of Appeals.

Sherman will fill the Fourth District vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Bernie Bridge effective in January.

The 60-year-old Sherman has been a member of the Legislature since 1999 representing the northern Wisconsin counties of Bayfield, Ashland, Iron and Sawyer. He is a member of the powerful budget-writing committee and is past president of the state Bar Association.

Doyle spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner says the governor will call a special election to fill Sherman's vacancy but he didn't know when it would be.

Sensenbrenner says he doesn't know when Sherman will resign.

Doyle selected Sherman over two other finalists.

A newly released statement from the Republican Party of Wisconsin makes it sound like they will be ready to fight for the upcoming special election in the 74th Assembly District.

Sherman and his seat has long been an RPW target because of his reversal in over-riding a Doyle veto of the Concealed Carry bill.
